Artist's Comments

she had dropped an ooth (the eggs-bearing cocoon) a few hours after the session, so it kind of explains her behavior. If I know anything about chicks...

Beautiful! I was wondering--how do you get your mantises to do this kind of threat display? I realize this one probably does it without any encouragement, but in general is there any way you can convince them to show off like this? I've been photographing some mantises that live out in the garden the last few days and they're extremely docile--no matter what I do they won't react like this. I don't want to hurt them or disturb them unnecessarily, but it would be nice to see them spread those wings!
