Artist's Comments

an image of lacewing larva head taken with a confocal laser scanning microscope (Olympus Fluoview FV1000).

The image is a projection of around 90 optical slices spaced 1.5 micrometer apart.

Muscles were stained with phalloidin-rhodamin and are visible in red.

Synapses were visualized with a specific antibody, the brain is visible more or less in the middle of the head. The remining blue signal comes from autofluorescence of tissues.

I'm often getting bored at work. we have cool toys though.
